PDP calls for removal of DSS,Daura

The national leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party on Wednesday alleged that the Director General of the Department of State Services, Mr. Lawal Daura, is a member of the governing party, the All Progressives Congress. With this, the opposition party therefore said that there was no way Daura could preside over the nation’s security apparatus without being partial. Acting National Chairman of the party, Prince Uche Secondus, stated this at a press briefing in Abuja. He spoke after the weekly meeting of the members of the National Working Committee of the party. The briefing was witnessed by members of the NWC. Secondus alleged that Daura was the chairman of the Intelligence Committee of the APC Presidential Campaign Council. He said the party decided to address the press conference with the aim of bringing to the notice of Nigerians and the international community, happenings in the country. Secondus said, “The NWC notes that this unfortunate development has been the case since the appointment of the new Director General of the DSS, Alhaji Lawal Daura, whom we learnt was a critical intelligence stakeholder of the APC as a card-carrying member of that party during the campaigns. This is ungodly and unacceptable. The President should review his appointment. “We do hope that in his new job, the Director General of DSS is not mixing issues on the APC presidential candidate and the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, hence the need for Mr. President to rein him in, as the development is capable of eroding the cherished independence of the judiciary and the electoral commission, a sine qua non for a virile democracy, which guarantees our unity and stability as a nation.” In his reaction, the National Publicity Secretary of the APC, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said his party sympathised with the PDP. Mohammed told our correspondent that it was obvious that the PDP could no longer cope with the popularity of President Muhammadu Buhari, hence the desire of the opposition party to fabricate stories. Besides, he wondered whether being a member of the Intelligence Committee of the APC Presidential Campaign was enough to disqualify Daura, if indeed he was a member. He said, “We clearly understand the difficulty of the PDP and honestly sympathise with them. In less than two months, President Buhari’s administration is such a roaring success and the President’s popularity growing daily that the PDP has to fabricate stories aimed at discrediting the APC led government. “Unfortunately, Nigerians are not falling for the gimmick. Nigerians are seeing concrete evidence of good governance, including but not limited to improved power supply, transparency in governance, readmission into the comity of civilised nations and new pride and confidence in being a Nigerian. “If the PDP wants, they can hold 10 press conferences a day. As long as the President continues to justify the expectations of Nigerians their press conferences will only serve as entertainment to relieve boredom.”

    Jonathan's minister cornered $6b

minister who served under the former Goodluck Jonathan administration, stole $6billion (more than N1.2 trillion), the governor of Edo State, Adams Oshiomhole, said Monday.Gov. Adams Oshiomhole
He said the details were provided last week by United States officials during President Muhammadu Buhari’s visit there. Mr. Oshiomhole, who was part of the delegation, did not give the name of the minister.
“We have moved away from a president that doesn’t seem to know his powers to one that understands that he is a president of the country in the continent,” Mr. Oshiomhole said in response to criticisms of the trip by the opposition Peoples Democratic Party.
He spoke on Monday at the state house where he and the Kebbi State governor, Atiku Bagudu, as members of the APC governors’ forum, briefed President Buhari on the outcome of a discussion held with APC Senators Sunday.
“PDP destroyed the country- I mean from the lips of American officials; senior officials of the state department. They said one minister under PDP cornered as much as $6billion, and the man said even by Washington standard that is earth-quaking,” he said.
He said the country was being very patient with the PDP, otherwise Nigerians would have been “stoning” anyone carrying the badge of the party.
Mr. Oshiomhole said the PDP government plundered Nigeria, destroyed its institutions, damaged the military, converted the NTA to a party megaphone, destroyed the SSS, went after opposition, and compromised even student unions.
“We are a very patient people. If we were not a patient people, anybody wearing the tag of PDP ought to feel very unsafe because you are all victims- all of us here,” he said.
Mr. Oshiomole said under the PDP, there was no law as they were law to themselves. He quoted American officials as saying that Mr. Jonathan was seen as a confused president who did not know what they issues were, leaving others outside the country “frustrated”.
Recalling a chat with the US Assistant Secretary of State, Johnnie Carson, on the difference between the two administrations, Mr. Oshiomhole said Mr. Carson told him that each time they thought that there was light at the end of the tunnel for Nigeria and it is time to encourage them to build on it, “you we would wake up the following day under president Jonathan to find out that even the tunnel had been removed”.

“Now last week, this same Carson cheered the president’s address at the Institute of Peace. And he said ‘we now have a man of enormous integrity; one that has shown so much faith in the democratic process; one that refused to be frustrated even in the face of massively rigged elections,” he said.

No state has received bailout funds – Oshiomhole

Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State says contrary to insinuations in many quarters, no state has received any bailout fund from the Federal Government.
He spoke on Saturday at a reception for the Inspector-General of Police, Solomon Arase, in Sabongida Ora, Owan West Local Government Area of the state.
According to the governor, the cheering news, however, is that President Muhammadu Buhari is committed to seeing an end to the situation where up to fifteen states owe workers’ salaries.
He said: “there is some conversation going on between the Federal Government and the Governors and the president has been extremely positive in recognizing that he does not want to preside over a country whose workers are not paid.
“At the end of the day, it is not acceptable where fourteen to fifteen states cannot pay salaries. The good news is that the president is standing by us and there is always a time lag between when you conceptualize and when you implement.
“For now, no government has got one naira under the bailout arrangement.”
On the Inspector-General of Police who was holding a thanksgiving on his elevation, the Governor said: “the celebrant is not just a man of history, there are many people who could become the I-G, by political connection, but I think he has a very unique ability.
“I also believe that your present elevation is a demonstration of the way you have sought to manage your office , deal with the challenges of the police force without being partisan, This is a difficult position to maintain. As an Edo man, you represent the finest tradition with courage, determination and intellect to your job no matter whose ox is gored”, he said.
Mr. Oshiomhole continued “I think at this time, the I-G would need all the prayers, support and encouragement particularly of Edo people. Let it not be said that the task of policing was made more difficult by the people of the state. And he is serving under a president who will not tolerate indiscipline. He is an I-G to drive changes in the psyche and governance of our great nation,
“It is a thing of pride to our people that coming from a minority, he has risen to become the I-G of the police. But we also recognize that he is coming to office at a very challenging time. This is the time we need such people with security of mind and competence to drive the changes which president Buhari has promised the people by ensuring that the police play their part of providing security to the people.”
On his part, the president of Ora Ekpen Development Association, S. Ahonkhai, said the I-G is forthright, dependable and a man of integrity.
He said “I humbly enjoin all of you to pray for him so that his tenure will become a milestone of the success in the history of the Nigerian Police.”
In an address of welcome, the chairman of the occasion, Ehimika Ifidon, said in celebrating the I-G, the Ora people of Edo State are also celebrating other sons and daughters who have made tremendous achievements in various areas.
Responding, Mr. Arase, said he felt elated to receive the honour being bestowed on him with joy.
He said “I remain extremely grateful for this honour and for the personal sacrifices that you have made to make this occasion a huge success. May the Almighty God return the honour you have bestowed on me and perfect your ways, grant you protection and success in all your endeavour.
“Sabongidda Ora has made my life. It reminds me of the time-tested saying that, ‘to whom much is given, much is expected’. I shall promise three things in return. First in my line of duty, I will continue to project those values that would edify this community. And I will not engage in anything that would bring our communal values to disrepute.
“I promise to give back to Sabongidda Ora and Owan what the community has given to me It is in furtherance of this that I incorporated the Madam Mercy Igbe-Arase nee Ifidon foundation which has been awarding scholarship to deserving Owan West and East undergraduates to enable them fulfill their dreams and make their lives worthwhile. Today, we have fifteen undergraduates that we are sponsoring”, he said.
“I wish to call on Nigeria parents to join hands to restore the dwindling discipline and moral standards and academic fashion of our youth. A community without moral attitude is a community that is threatened with serious social disorder like kidnapping, armed robbery and cultism.”
The citation was read by Mr. Alufokhai while goodwill messages were delivered by Oseriemen Osunbor, Mike Ogiadomhe, Roland Owie and Sam Igbe.

The ceremony attracted many dignitaries including Ehigie Uzamere, Roland Owie, Yisa Braimoh, Arumemi Johnson-Ikhide, Moses Ihonde, traditional rulers, members of the state executive council and old students of Holy Trinity Grammar School, among others.

Buhari's continued Appointment of Northerners to sensitive positions may spark off crisis in the polity

Less than a week after President Muhammad Buhari appointed Calistus Obi, an Igbo by ethnicity, as acting director general/chief executive of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), the president today raised eyebrows when he approved the appointment of Haruna Baba Jauro as the new acting DG of NIMASA. The new appointee, Mr. Jauro, is from the northeastern state of Yobe and an Hausa by ethnicity. New NIMASA Ag. DG, Haruna Baba Jauro
Mr. Buhari’s unexplained removal of Mr. Obi and his appointment of Mr. Jauro has sparked accusations in political circles that the president was unduly filling major posts with individuals from the northern part of Nigeria where he hails from.
Mr. Obi, who lost his less-than weeklong job today, is from Anambra State in southeastern Nigeria. Critics quickly point to the appointment of Mrs. Amina Bala Zakari as acting Chairperson of the Independent Nationation Electoral Commission (INEC) who remained office despite the expiration of her tenure since July 21 2015.
A prominent politician from Anambra State, who asked that his name not be disclosed, told SaharaReporters that he and several other Igbo figures were troubled by President Buhari’s action on the leadership of NIMASA.
“Anybody who knows about maritime issues can tell you that [Calistus] Obi is very knowledgeable,” said the source, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party. He added, “Why would Mr. President remove him after just a few days, even though he was appointed in an acting capacity? What was the hurry in firing him? And it is interesting that Alhaji Jauro’s appointment is also in acting capacity.”
Another politician from the southwest zone also questioned today’s presidential appointment. The politician, who belongs to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), told SaharaReporters that there was widespread worry that Mr. Buhari’s appointments so far “have been more than 90% in favor of northerners and Muslims.”
Last week, speaking at the United Institute of Peace in Washington, DC, Mr. Buhari had stated that he should not be expected to treat areas that gave him 97% of their votes the same way as those that gave him only five percent. After realizing the political implications of his reckless statement, the Nigerian president made a belated attempt to correct the faux pas.

A member of President Buhari’s delegation to the US reportedly told several people in Washington, DC that Mr. Buhari seemed to listen only to members of his inner circle, led by former Nigerian Defense Minister, Theophilus Y. Danjuma.

U.S. President Barack Obama told African entrepreneurs in Kenya on Saturday they could help counter violent ideologies and drive growth in Africa, and said governments had to assist by ensuring the rule of law was upheld and by tackling corruption.
Obama was addressing a Global Entrepreneurship Summit at the start of the first presidential visit to Kenya, his father's homeland and the biggest economy in east Africa, which has been hit by a spate of attacks by Somali Islamist group al Shabaab.
Security was expected to top the agenda in talks later on Saturday with President Uhuru Kenyatta but Obama is keen to increase business ties with Africa, where China overtook the United States as the continent's biggest trade partner in 2009.
"Africa is on the move. Africa is one of the fastest growing regions in the world," Obama told the conference, where he was greeted by applause when he began with the words "Jambo", the Swahili for "hello". "It is wonderful to be back in Kenya.
"Entrepreneurship offers a positive alternative to the ideologies of violence and division that can all too often fill the void when young people don't see a future for themselves."
He said government had a vital role on issues such as establishing the rule of law and curbing corruption, citing two issues often cited by businesses as major obstacles. He said more had to be done to help new firms secure capital.
An array of technology and other companies have started up in recent years in Africa in a bid to shift the continent away from a traditional focus of commodity exports, but entrepreneurs often complain they cannot find affordable capital.
"Africa is open for business," Kenyatta said in his opening in which he welcomed the U.S. president. "It is the time for a new generation of Africans to promote inclusive prosperity."
    KENYAN, ETHIOPIAN ECONOMIES SURGING
Kenya's economy is expected to grow by about 6 percent this year. The economy of Ethiopia, Obama's next stop, is forecast to expand by more than 10 percent, although right groups say Addis Ababa's economic achievements are at the expense of free speech.
The annual U.S.-sponsored conference was being held for the first time in Sub-Saharan Africa at a U.N. compound in Nairobi.
After attending the conference, Obama laid a wreath to victims of the 1998 bombing by Islamist militants of the U.S. Embassy. The site of the attack in central Nairobi is now a memorial park. The new mission is further from the center.
The U.S. president was to hold talks later with Kenyatta before attending a state dinner in the evening. Discussions were expected to focus on security and counter-terrorism cooperation.
"Proud to be the first American president to visit Kenya. Happy to see family, and to talk with young Kenyans about the future," Obama wrote on his Twitter account after arriving on Friday and meeting relatives for dinner.
Some Africans complain that Obama, whose father is buried in western Kenya, has not paid enough attention to the continent in his presidency. Obama has sought to change that perception, in part by hosting African leaders in Washington last year.

One of Obama's initiatives, launched in 2013, was to boost electricity supplies across a continent where many are not on the grid. The goal is to add 30,000 megawatts (MW) of capacity. Deals to add 4,100 MW have been agreed so far, the White House said.
