Massive fraud uncovered in Benue exam board, others

Dr.-Samuel-Ortom-Nigeria-Supervising-Minister-of-Aviation

The transition committee set up by Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom to scrutinise the handover notes of his predecessor, Gabriel Suswam, has uncovered massive fraud at the State Examination Board.
The committee is headed by former Head of Service (HOS) and All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship aspirant, Mike Iordye with Professor Steven Ugba and Secretary to the State Government (SSG) among others as members.
The committee is sitting at presidential lodge located within Government House Makurdi.
Documents obtained exclusively by The Nation shows that the management of Benue State Examination led by a top female executive (name withheld) singlehandedly coughed out N15 million from the accounts without approval.
The said cash was donated to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) during the last general elections.
It was also gathered the female executive also bought a Toyota Hilux vehicle at N10 million, which was donated to the party for campaign with the hope she would be retained at the board if the PDP won.
It was learnt that the defeat of PDP at the state and federal levels emboldened some top management members of the board to leak the information.
Investigation revealed that since the sleaze was leaked to members of the transition committee, the embattled female executive had embarked on vendetta by posting those she suspected to have blown the whistle behind her ordeal to other ministries.
One of the affected staff, Abur Dyer, who has served the examination board for many years, has been unceremoniously moved to Ministry of Finance without an office as a punitive measure.
But those who see their transferred as punitive measures have vowed to fight back and open up to the transition committee.
A member of the committee who spoke to The Nation on condition of anonymity said that apart from the examination board, the transition committee also uncovered massive fraud in Benue Investment and Property Company (BIPC), Benue Links Transport Company and Ministry of Finance.
Millions of were said to have been paid on dubious contracts without proper documentation in the agencies.

Buhari: Ekweremadu as Saraki’s deputy unacceptable

buhari (1)

•APC governors, state chairmen want Saraki, Dogara to accept party’s list on principal officers
•Ogbeh may head disciplinary committee
For President Muhammadu Buhari, the emergence of a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) member as deputy Senate President in the current dispensation is nothing short of a setback for his administration.
He is irked that some members of his own party, All Progressives Congress (APC), conceded the position to Ike Ekweremadu when the PDP never gave that much all through its 16 years in power between 1999 and last May.
But he is optimistic that the APC will overcome the setback.
President Buhari made his feelings known at a meeting with a delegation of the   Unity Forum at the Aso Rock Villa on Friday night.
The forum is the group of senators backing Dr. Ahmed Lawan, the APC anointed candidate for the Senate Presidency.
Buhari, at the meeting, reportedly pleaded for the understanding of APC Senators as the party explores reconciliation options.
However, the majority of the APC governors and state chairmen of the party are insisting that Senate President Bukola Saraki and House of Reps Speaker Yakubu Dogara comply with the party’s directive on the choice of principal officers of the National Assembly.
The APC governors and state chairmen are encouraging the leadership of the party to enforce discipline to prevent it from collapsing.
Some party leaders, it was gathered, have proposed a former National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Audu Ogbeh, as chairman of the APC Disciplinary Committee to look into allegations of anti-party activities against some members.
President Buhari at the Friday meeting was said to have said there was no reason for the party to be divided over who heads the National Assembly.
“The President gave us audience and admitted that the development in the Senate was a setback but he expressed confidence that APC will overcome it,” a source at the meeting said.
“He said there was no basis for the split among APC Senators which led to the concession of the Office of Deputy President of the Senate to the PDP. He said PDP did not give the opposition such an opportunity in its 16 years in power.
“Buhari told Lawan and others not to take the law into their hands as the leaders of the party explore reconciliation options. He said peace and the survival of the nation’s democracy should be paramount more than any other thing.”
Asked to assess the President’s mood at the session, the source added: “He was not happy about the development in the Senate but he was hopeful that the situation is redeemable if some leaders can sacrifice their ambitions for the survival of APC and his administration.”
Another source said: “The session was cordial and reassuring. The President interacted with us individually and even had time to crack jokes with us before we receded into the business of the day.
“As for the Lawan group, it was Senator Barnabas Gemade who spoke on behalf of the 51 aggrieved Senators.
“Gemade said the Unity Forum is after justice since its members have demonstrated their faith in APC leadership and having been loyal to the party to a fault.
“Gemade restated the six demands of the group and the need to prevail on Saraki and Dogara to abide by the directive of the party on the nominees for principal offices in the Senate and House of Representatives.”
The source quoted Gemade as saying: “When the Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo called a meeting to address the looming challenge, it was only our group that responded; we were the only group which participated in the party’s straw poll and even on June 9, we deferred to the party’s invitation to a meeting at the International Conference Centre.
“Before anybody knew it, the Like Minds went for the inauguration of the Senate and elected Saraki.
“We have proved our unflinching loyalty to the party. This is the time for the party to assert itself and enforce discipline or else members will continue to take the leadership of the party for granted.”
Ahead of the meeting of the National Executive Committee of the APC on Tuesday, there were indications last night that the governors elected on the platform of the party and state chairmen are pushing for Dr. Saraki and Hon. Dogara to comply with the party’s directive on the choice of principal officers of the National Assembly.
They said they will no longer tolerate the defiance of the party by the two leaders.
A member of the NWC said: “We are expecting a stormy session on Tuesday. Saraki and Dogara will have to choose between loyalty to the party or self-serving agenda.
“The only condition for moving forward is for these leaders to accept the list sent to them by the National Chairman of APC, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun.
Those  recommended by the APC for Senate positions are Sen. Ahmed  Lawan(Majority Leader)—North-East; Prof. Sola Adeyeye( Chief Whip)—South-West; Sen. George Akume( Deputy Majority Leader)—North-Central; and Sen. Abu Ibrahim(Deputy Chief Whip)—North-West.
The party’s list for the 8th House of Representatives  is as follows:  Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila( House Leader)——South-West; Hon. Alhassan Ado Doguwa( Deputy House Leader)—North-West; Hon. M. T. Monguno( Chief Whip)—North-East; and Hon. Pally Iriase( Deputy Chief Whip)—South-South.
It was gathered that if Saraki and Dogara refused to respect the party’s list, APC may resort to sanctions.
It was learnt that some forces in the party are pushing for the appointment of a former National Chairman of PDP, Chief Audu Ogbeh as the head of the party’s Disciplinary Committee.
A top member of the party said: “There is no doubt that Ogbeh is well grounded in party politics and he is a disciplinarian.  We are thinking of him to assist in unraveling the anti-party activities in the Senate and the House.

Wike Seizes Amaechi’s Aide’s Car

The Rivers State government on Saturday impounded an armoured Range Rover belonging to the immediate past Chief of Staff, Government House, Port Harcourt, Chief Tony Okocha.
The bullet-proof vehicle was removed from Okocha residence at Rumuigbo in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area at about 9am by security operatives attached to Government House.
It will be recalled that a Lexus SUV was removed from the residence of the former State Commissioner for Information, Mrs. Ibim Semenitari, on June 18, 2015 in a similar fashion.
Though, the former aid to ex-governor, Rotimi Amaechi, was not around when the operation was carried out, it was gathered that the vehicle was taken away without any resistance.
Government officials had insisted that the armoured Range Rover belonged to Rivers State and not any individual.
Speaking on the development, Okocha said he was in Abuja to observe the Rivers Election Tribunal when he was informed that his vehicle had been taken away on the orders of the State Governor, Chief Nyesom Wike.
Okocha maintained that the vehicle was his ‘status car’, which the law allowed his to own after his service as a Government House chief of staff.
He explained that though he was not miffed by Wike’s action, he was only surprised at the governor’s ‘seeming introduction of militarism into democracy.
According to him, “I have just been informed of the forceful confiscation of my status car in the usual brigandage and ‘Rambo’ approach, which typifies the new caretaker administration in Rivers State.
“I am not, however, surprised at the uncouth action, knowing Mr. Wike’s nuances like the back of my hand, but warn that this seeming introduction of militarism into our democratic experience and the attendant ignominies may well become our bane if not checked.
“It was the courtesy of Rt. Hon. Amaechi that Wike became the minister of the Federal Republic, an exposure that he (Wike) seized to effectively malign his benefactor because of vaulting ambition.”
He, however, disagreed with the claim that the Range Rover parked in his residence was without its four tyres when it was taken away.
“Is it possible to remove the tyres of my vehicle that I drive always? It is a white lie to say that the vehicle was parked without tyres.
“If they think they are saying the truth, let them show pictures of the vehicle while it was being removed. They must have used a forklift to remove it.”
But special adviser to the Governor on Media and Publicity, Opunabo Inko-Tariah, stated that there was no way an armoured Range Rover would be a status car of a Chief of Staff, Government House.
Stressing that the four tyres of the vehicle were removed at the point it was parked inside Okocha’s residence, Inko-Tariah said the bulletproof Range Rover was the property of the state government.
He said, “As chief of staff, he (Okocha) has no right to use a bulletproof car without leave from government. Yes, a bulletproof Range Rover was recovered from his (Okocha) residence.
“However, what is staggering is that he removed all the tyres to demobilise the car and obviously to frustrate recovery.
“That act in itself is highly suspicious and obviates the need for any further evidence that it was stolen from Government House. You don’t need to remove the tyres of your car if there are no sinister plots.”

NNPC: Alison-Madueke must be probed

madueke

A Lagos-based human rights lawyer, Festus Keyamo, has insisted that Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs. Diezani Alison-Madueke must be probed.
His call is coming barely 24 hours after President Muhammadu Buhari dismissed all the Board members of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC.
The lawyer had, on June 17, written the Senate President and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, asking the National Assembly to begin investigations into the activities of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, especially with regard to the crude oil swap programme and offshore processing agreements of the company.
Keyamo claimed in his letter that some NNPC officials, in collaboration with some local companies, were looting the country’s resources.
In an interview with Sahara TV on Saturday, Keyamo insisted that Madueke must be investigated.
He said, “It is about a whole lot of issues. In my petition, I was particular about what has come to be known as the crude oil swap deals. Under this arrangement, we never knew that a lot of our crude oil was given to private oil companies in exchange for their bringing in petroleum products. Under one arrangement, they were supposed to take it out. We signed (out) the products and then took them back to Nigeria whether they were petroleum products or by-products.
“Under the other arrangement, we were supposed to be given the crude oil to sell at the international market and then use the money to import petroleum products into the country. Now, there have been reports in the papers of late that under these arrangements, certain Nigerian oil and gas companies made very huge, unwarranted profits and the simple reason is that they imported far less than the crude oil that they bought.
“Under this arrangement, some of them bought private jets, property around the world and began to live large. Certain individuals in the NNPC were seen as collaborators in this deceitful and grand plot. Before the minister left office, she picked up her pen and wrote a petition to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, inviting it to probe these individuals and these groups”.
He explained that the minister could have easily called for the offenders and given queries to them.
“Why did she wait till the last minute to write a petition to the EFCC to probe these deals? And I told myself: It is not a safe person who runs to a police station to complain that is always the victim of the crime”, Keyamo said.

According to several media reports, Nigerian-born scientist, Samuel Achilefu, has been awarded the prestigious 2014 Louis Award for creating cancer-seeing glasses.
A professor of radiology and biomedical engineering, Dr. Achilefu and his team developed the imaging technology in cancer diagnosis into a wearable night vision-like goggles so surgeons could see the cancer cells while operating, according to sources.
“They basically have to operate in the dark,” said Dr. Achilefu in a Bloomberg Businessweek report.
This month, the goggles were used on humans for the first time by surgeons at the Washington University School of Medicine, where four patients suffering from breast cancer and over two dozen patients with melanoma or liver cancer were operated on using the goggles since they were developed.
Dr. Achilefu and his team began work in 2012 after they received $2.8 million grant from the National Institutes of Health, according to the report. Before then, they had been working on a lean budget provided by the Department of Defence’s Breast Cancer Research Program.
After it was developed, the team spent years testing the technology on mice, rats, and rabbits to confirm the efficacy of the goggles.

Husband Receives Strange Knocks on the Head,Anytime he Sleeps with Wife

A middle-aged woman, Sophia Arapogun, has prayed an Agege customary court to dissolve her 11-year-old marriage because her husband, Patrick, abandoned her for two years.

Mrs Arapogun, who lives with her husband and his six children from his previous marriage, said he never asked her how she fed.

“My husband buys foodstuffs for his children and asks them to keep them in their room. He never asked what I needed at a particular moment and we lived together,” she said.

The petitioner said her husband came home at a time to sprinkle something that looked like blood all over the house, adding that she worked as a clerical officer in her husband’s hospital.

.
She said: “I used to package melon to sell in neighboring markets but since my husband didn’t like the idea, he employed me in his hospital. There was a day I took N300 to take passport photograph, he shouted at me in the presence of his children and I felt humiliated.

I was more shocked when he made sure I refunded the money.”

She is seeking an accommodation from him as compensation if her petition is granted.

Patrick said he married her because he heard a pathetic story about her, adding:

“I asked if she had any evil spirit or medical problems which didn’t make her conceive during her two previous marriages but she said no; then I married her.”

The respondent, a doctor, said after their marriage, he discovered that three minutes after making love to her, he got a knock on his head.

“Not only did I get a knock, whenever I had the intention of sleeping with her, I would discover rashes on my manhood or my manhood would be twisted. At times, I would not get Attention or my sperm ceases. Since then, I became afraid of everything,” Arapogun said.

He said his hospital crumbled after his wife began to work with him, adding that she stole money on several occasions.

“When we lived together, there were times my wife left the bedroom and returned in the morning without any explanation. Our union is bad omen.

I have suffered from swollen legs, slight stroke and it was when I realized my wife defecates in the bucket I used to bathe that I decided to leave with my children because I was not ready to die young and I don’t know what was going to happen next,” he said.

The couple has no issue.

President of the court, Pa Adekunle Williams, ordered the petitioner to maintain the peace and adjourned the matter till July 13 for further hearing.

Gonorrhea, also called the "clap" or "drip," gonorrhea is a contagious Sexually Transmitted Disease (STD).
As an STD, it is transmitted most often through sexual contact with an infected person – from man to woman and from woman to man.
Sadly, it can also be transferred from an infected mother to her child during pregnancy, labor or breastfeeding.
It is more prevalent among people aged 14 60 – sexually active age group.
The biggest scare of it all is that Gonorrhea CAN LEAD TO INFERTILITY in both men and women if untreated!!!
Here are the symptoms to look out for:
  1. Painful burning sensation during urination

  2. Discharge from penis or vagina

  3. Skin rashes

  4. Swollen/painful testicles (men)

  5. Pelvic pain (women)

  6. Lower abdomen pain

  7. Pain during sex (especially women)

  8. Frequent urge to urinate

A combination of any or all the above could be signals of Gonorrhea, which can sometimes be easily confused with a urinary tract or vaginal infection (UTI).

This is why, you need medical diagnosis and lab tests to really be sure.
Unfortunately, sometime gonorrhea may cause no symptoms.

NOTE: Gonorrhea can be treated with antibiotic but it is best to consult a doctor for medical advice.
Isn’t this another reason to use a condom?

GOODNEWS: Ortom Sets to Pay Benue Workers 2 Months Salary

Governor Ortom has disclosed that his government would use the loan it was about to obtain from the bank to pay two months salaries in the first instance beginning with May after which that of June would be preceded by the staff audit which he said had become necessary to flush out ghost workers and block financial leakages.
Governor Samuel Ortom announced this today when the forum of former Local Government Chairmen in the state visited him at the Benue Peoples House.
He said the administration would also use the loan to tackle other challenges such as accreditation of programmes at the College of Health Sciences of the Benue State University, BSU, Makurdi and take off of the State House of Assembly as well as other pressing government business.
The Governor also informed members of the Forum that his administration would follow due process in all its dealings while stressing the need for them to cooperate with it to succeed.
According to him his success would encourage the people of the state to entrust more leadership positions on former chairmen of councils.
In a remark, Chairman of the Forum, Chief Mrs Keziah Agundu urged the Governor to be prudent, accountable, tolerant and put the welfare of staff and pensioners top most in his government.
She urged him to forgive all his opponents saying if he was able to pay salaries alone his one hundred days in office would be meaningful.
In separate comments, Mr. Nathaniel Ikem who spoke on behalf of Benue North East Senatorial zone, John Uan for Benue North West and Moses Enenche for Benue South all pledged to rally round the Governor to ensure that he succeeded.
