Pope Francis has said he has not watched TV in 25 years, does not use the internet and reads one newspaper a day for only 10 minutes.

In an interview with the Argentinian newspaper La Voz Del Pueblo, the Pontiff also said that he misses going out in the streets of Rome to visit a pizzeria.

"I haven't watched TV since 1990," Francis told the newspaper.

"It's a promise I made to the Virgin of Carmen on the night of 15 July 1990."

Asked if there was a specific reason why he doesn't watch television, he responded: "I told myself, 'It's not for me'."

Pope Francis is known to be a football fan, but he said he does not watch matches of his favourite team, San Lorenzo, and relies on a Swiss Guard to tell him the results and the tables.

The Pope, 78, said he reads one newspaper a day, La Repubblica, a left-leaning Italian daily.

Among the things he misses about life before he was elected to the Pontificate is going out for pizza.

He said having a pizza delivered to the Vatican is "not the same", adding: "The point is to go there."
